PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A concept art project based on the 2016 video game "Hyper Light Drifter," with the goal of conceptualizing the idea of an animated movie adaptation. This project was an exploration of style and conceptual design, with the style being inspired by the "How to Train Your Dragon" series. It presented a unique adaptation challenge due to the game having absolutely no dialogue— only using visuals, sound and music to drive it's story.

MODEL SHEET

Model sheet of the protagonist, "The Drifter." In the game, he is represented as being quite small and skinny when sizing him up to the other characters in the game. The only thing we definitively know about him is that he is dying of a sickness, and is trying to find a cure for himself.

With that, I made the decision to make him a younger character, within the range of 15-17 years old, as it inherently can show both a mental, physical and skill growth as the story progresses, synonymous with getting in-game upgrades and skills as the player progresses.

In the game, the Drifter's face is never shown, being almost completely covered save for his eyes. This presented a fun challenge of trying to visualize what his face would look like. He already looked alien-like with his blue skin and blacked out eyes, so I pushed it further with pointy, elf-like ears and white hair, while still being humanoid enough to explore distinct expressions.

A color style frame of The Drifter and "The Guardian." Rather than focusing on detailed rendering, the goal was to create a distinct mood and lighting that would influence how the scene should look and feel in later production stages.

An environment concept based off an in-game location known as "The Water Shelf," which features the arm of some ancient bio-mechanical titan wielding a colossal sword, jutting out from a large hole.

Rendered using a combination of photo-bashing and digital painting.
